School Bells: No More?

Only recently at NPHS, the bells used to indicate the ending and beginnings of class periods, lunches, and passing times have been repaired after weeks of being absent from the daily routine.  Teachers were dismissing students based on the time the class would normally end, without an actual bell notifying when class is over.  During that time, there was a question whether the the bell system could be overhauled.

Mrs. King, Mrs. Pilla, Mr. Laurie and Mr. Cicerone are on a committee organized by Mr. Goho and the superintendent to discuss the bell situation. When asked about the bell schedule changing, Mr. Laurie stated “…the bell system not working was a coincidence only, though I wondered the same thing.”

All the members of the committee will be attending a meeting on February 10th hosted by RIDE to get an understanding of the situation and possible future goals that can be achieved.  The meeting will give insight to the members on how high schools are set up and organized.  Other faculty members were asked for their input and if they would like to see any changes to the bell schedule, though no one has come forward with any ideas.

Currently, there are no major changes being discussed regarding the length of class periods, the school day, or passing times.  Only minor points have been brought up such as making periods longer for lessons.  Mr. Goho wants the day to stay relatively the same, and possibly even make lunch times longer.

All members of the committee will have a better understanding of the goals and of the situation once they have attended the meeting.
