Recently, politicians from the Basque Region and the City of Madrid in Spain have non-stop been arguing over a request for a Picasso painting to be moved temporarily to the Guggenheim museum in the Basque Region for 9 months for the anniversary of the 1937 bombing of the town of Gernika by Fascist Italy and Germany, and the formation of the Basque Region’s first government. I should also mention that the Picasso painting, “Guernica”, depicts the bombing and the horrors of war, becoming an international anti-war symbol.
However, the City of Madrid’s politicians do not want the painting to move there and have called the Basque Region “Unsophicated” and “Narrow-minded.”. The Basque Region’s politicians responded by questioning why Picasso’s tomb is allowed to be moved but not a single painting.
It also seems that concerns about damage to the painting if moved are currently rising, like cracks forming in the painting and the fact it’s been transported around 30 times and could be damaged further if moved.
As of writing, they are still arguing and insulting each other, and it is unlikely the painting will be moved unless Madrid is forced to.
