To run or not to run: that is the question. The first two weeks of spring sports has just sprinted by and some new athletes are doubting in their decision of joining a sport. The question that arises every spring is being groaned between rounds of stretching: “did I make a mistake joining this sport?”
As a freshman doing her first spring sport (track and field), I understand the pain of going from little/no excersize to a practice every day for the next few months. My legs ache so much and for the first few days, I could barely carry my backpack up the stairs (yes this was because I was not properly stretching…but still!) So, if all that is the problem, what’s the point of keeping going on this sport? Is it even worth it to join a sport?
In my opinion, despite the original pain, track (and I’m assuming other sports) are very much worth it. After the initial soreness, you remember why you loved the sport or you discover a new sport you love (personal ex: high jump)! You get to run around and meet new people, along with mental health improvements that joining a sport brings on. So overall, it’s worth it to push through the initial pains, because sticking with a sport is, in my experience, something that you won’t regret!
