Today, April 10th, 2024, the PSAT/SATs took place for sophomores and juniors. While all seniors were on the first floor in classrooms participating in career day, the freshmen were all in the gymnasium.
In the morning, they had us all sit on the bleachers to explain to us how career day would work. Then, they split everyone up into groups of 20 which depended on the group you sat with on the bleachers.
In the main gymnasium, there were a bunch of different activities and stands. This included the VAASA stand where they talked about drug usage and we even got to play volleyball with the drunk goggles on. Next was a mental health stand where we played hot potato. Then, there was this group where we had to do physical activity like jump roping, exercises, hoola hooping, and more. Lastly, there was a JROTC stand where they talked about how it was like and they even had a push up contest.
The other gymnasium were all groups that mainly had to do with health and safety. A bunch of EMTs and nurses came in to talk about different things. The first three stations were about how to perform CPR. We did this on a regular CPR doll, a child CPR doll and an infant CPR doll.
The next station was about splinting.
Then, we learned about how to use tourniquets and we even got to try those out as well! There was also a dead mannequin which was lowkey terrifying.
Then, we got to the blood pressure station where we were able to use a blood pressure cuff and a stethoscope.
The last station that my group was able to do was the choking station. This is where a nurse talked about how to perform the Heimlich on someone who’s choking and in need of it.
Once all groups were settled, we were able to go to lunch. Afterwards, we went back to the gym for about 45 more minutes. Some people took the time to play volleyball while some just sat around to talk to their friends. Once it was over, everyone went to their 7th period class.
Overall, career day was pretty fun and educational. It was good to see all of my friends that I don’t have classes with.
