Musical Review – 9 to 5!

Andrew Mendes

Over the weekend audiences at the North Providence High School auditorium were treated to the performance of 9 to 5 the Musical. This performance was put on by the drama troupe of North Providence. The North Providence band performed the score for the evening. The musical is an adaptation of the iconic 1980 movie 9 to 5 which starred Dolly Parton, Jane Fonda, and Lily Tomlinson. The leading roles of Violet Newstead, Doralee Rhodes, Franklin Hart Jr., and Judy Bernley were played by  Sadie Evans, Jaiden Wyner, Jeremy Giammarco, and Nora O’Connor.

The movie and musical follow the same plot. The story centers around three women working in a corporate office. They all have one thing in common: they are treated horribly by their boss and are fed up with the treatment. One day while making her boss Franklin Hart Jr.’s coffee, Violet accidentally puts rat poison into the coffee. She confides her secret in her friends Doralee and Judy. Soon the three women find themself in a predicament and scheme a ridiculous plot to solve the issue that had audiences in stitches.

As I write this review I am at a loss for words on how to describe the performance. The performance defied all standards previously set by the drama troupe. Each actor in the musical showed their acting abilities and proved that they were rightfully cast in the role. As you began to fall into the story you also felt transported to Broadway tanks to the acting and the spectacular band. Although the actors and band were phenomenal the real star of the show was the vocal abilities of the three lead actresses. The three main leads displayed their superb vocal abilities which blew the audience away leaving them in awe and patiently waiting for more. This play is keeping North Providence High School patiently waiting for the next musical so we can once again be blown away by the Drama troupe.
