Rap music has been a big part of American culture for the past 5 decades. Artists like Kendrick Lamar, Kanye West, Tyler the Creator, and many more big names have won awards like Best Rap Album, but not album of the year. The last rapper to have won album of the year was Outkast (Andre 3000 and Big Boi) for their album Speakerboxxx/The Love Below. They were awarded exactly 20 years ago. This year Kendrick Lamar’s most vulnerable and emotional album, Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers lost to Harry Styles’ album, Harry’s House. A possible cause to why rappers have yet to win Album of the Year is because of the separate category of Rap Album of the Year. With albums from artists like Travis Scott and Tyler the Creator coming later this year, rap fans may have a chance of seeing a rapper win album of the year again.
