As Spring sports get underway you can’t forget about Coach Dean Garganese and his always contending Cougars on the diamond. In the past the North Providence baseball team has gone against competition and has played at a level higher than most Cougar Athletics, as they compete in the prestigious Division I-A. After finishing 4th with an 11-7 record last season, the Cougars look to make a splash quickly. But, that will be tough as they will have to go through competition like LaSalle, Lincoln, and the 4- time defending, almost unbeatable powerhouse, Bishop Hendricken. The captains of the 2016 team will be Austin Conte, Anthony “Pesky” Pescarino, Sullivan Tallmadge, and Eric Arenas .

The Cougars have opened up the first month of the season with a 3-5 record. The competition of D-1 has shown as almost each game has come down to the wire. A 4-5 loss to Lincoln to open the season, 2-1 win against St. Rays, 6-7 win against  Woonsocket, 4-3 defeat against Cranston West, a 3-2 defeat against Pilgrim, another loss to Lincoln 4-0, and a key 8-7 come from behind win against LaSalle fueled by Austin Conte’s 3-run home run. The only loss handed to the Cougars that was one-sided was the 12-0 defeat handed to them by none other than Hendricken. A 3-5 record do not define the Cougars though halfway into the season as each game can go either way looking at the previous scores. The Cougars hope to make a run in the tough D-I playoffs and surprise many.

The next game for the Cougars will be away at Middletown on Wednesday April 4th.
