The North Providence Cougar football team is on a roll. The Cougar football team is coming off of a very convincing 28-6 win against Tiverton which brought their record to 4-2 in division 4 play and looked for another in their next game against Scituate. This game was very important in the standings and playoff seeding, and in payback as the Scituate Spartans were the team who knocked the Cougars out of the playoffs last year. But, it was also the last time the Cougar Football seniors played on their home field again. Many players can date back to when they had gold Jets jerseys on and first played on the field many, many years ago, so this game was huge to all of them. Before the game started, 12 seniors were honored, Walter Vieira, Lucas Martin, Amanda Fortes, Sharon Akwensivie, Gevanni Alves, Matt Van Nort, Francys Sosa, Matthew Weidinger, Deavon “Buckets” Sheperd, and captains Rakeem Bontemp, Nathan Moreira, and Brian Iannuccillo. The game was in the hands of the Cougars the whole time as North Providence dominated all 4 quarters offensively and defensively. On the first drive, Dave Tacelli hooked up with Francys Sosa for a 30-yard touchdown pass. The running back trifecta of Lucas Martin, Rakeem Bontemp, and Nathan Moreira were on show again as all 3 back scored with Moreira scoring twice and leading the way with 110 yard total rushing for the day. QB Dave Tacelli also rsuhed for a tocuhdown. Deavon “Buckets” Sheperd scored the last touchdown of the game for the Cougars as he raced down the sideline for a 35-yard touchdown. The Cougar defense was stout all day only allowing 8 points, with a forced fumble by Moreira and recovered by Van Nort and 3 interceptions on the day, 2 from Sammy Sosa and 1 from Amanda Fortes. The Cougars came out on top 39-8 and now have locked up a playoff spot and currently sit in 3rd place behind Burriville and 1st place Smithfield with a 5-2 record. The Cougars will finish out the regular season with an away game against 3-4 Central Falls who sit in 4th place, Friday night at Central Falls and will gear up for the playoffs.
