Psychology Students Create Their Own Surveys

Valerie Romjue, Staff Writer

At NPHS, junior and senior psychology students get the chance to create their very own surveys!  The four psychology classes, two taught by Mrs. Bozigian and two taught by Mrs. Ambrose, were assigned a project that required them to create a survey with a minimum of fifteen questions and maximum of twenty questions.  The topic for the survey needed to be interesting to the participants.  One example of an interesting survey topic was done by junior BriAnna Rogue.  Her survey question was, “Which Once Upon a Time Character are You?”  The students were also required to administer their surveys to twenty-five high school juniors and seniors then compile and sort results. In order to complete this assignment, students had to use research and analytical skill to formulate appropriate survey questions.  After tallying up results, they created a bar, pie, or line graph to visually represent results.  Then the students were asked to analyze their results in two paragraphs.

This assignment has been going on during the month of October.  Mrs. Bozigian says, “The purpose of the assignment is to give students an opportunity to have fun using serious skills that an actual psychologist would.  The survey also helps me get to know the students and their personalities.  The project is very interactive.”  One of the responsibilities of a psychologist is to conduct research projects and surveys on certain groups of people.  Creating questionnaires and surveys is is one of the psychological methods mentioned in chapter two of the psychology book. Students enrolled in the psychology class were exposed to a hands-on experience of a method used by real life psychologists.
