Just two weeks ago North Providence High School held its annual “Pink Spirit Week” in support of Breast Cancer awareness. As a yearly a tradition, Pink Spirit Week has been taking place at NPHS for two years and began when Ms. Thompson, an English teacher at NPHS, created and directed the event. Last school year Ms. Marsland, also an English teacher at NPHS, took over and began directing the activity. Many seniors whose senior projects are focused on Breast Cancer and the Gloria Gemma Foundation benefited from Pink Spirit Week, as it assisted them with the formation of their projects; Marsland hosts weekly meetings for these seniors for further assistance with their projects.
During Pink Spirit Week, all were encouraged to wear as much pink as possible and there was a theme for each day of the week. Monday, Marsland and the seniors working with her posted facts about Breast Cancer throughout the building on bright pink paper. Tuesday, Maureen DiPiero, a worker of the Gloria Gemma Foundation, came to speak to the seniors about Breast Cancer. Wednesday, pink ribbons were placed in each teacher’s mailbox. Thursday during all three lunches, students had the opportunity to right “messages of hope” on pink paper ribbons provided to them from the seniors. Friday, all were asked to wear pink during the school day. That night the annual “Pink Out” basketball game took place at 7:00, and an exceptional amount of students attended. On the doors of the gymnasiums the students’ messages of hope were displayed for all to see. The game was a great end to a great and inspirational week.
