On Monday, September 22, the North Providence High School girls’ tennis team took on the Northmen of North Smithfield High School. After a 6-1 loss last season, the team knew they had to fight for a win this year. The singles players faced tough battles; however, the 4th singles player, junior Tanushri Kannadhasan, dominated with an impressive 6-1, 6-0 victory.
It was then up to the doubles to secure a win for the Cougars. The 1st doubles team, seniors Mendy Chen and Alisha Zhuang, played fantastically with a 6-3, 6-0 win against their opponents. Similarly, the 2nd doubles team, seniors Lyndsie Lapierre and Jayla Hall, also won both sets with great volleys and serves, achieving 6-3, 6-0 scores.
With the team score now reading 3-3, it was up to the 3rd doubles team, junior Lilliana Albanese and senior Elizabeth Ricci, to determine the victors. After losing the first game of the set, they knew they had to turn the match around, eventually winning both sets with a 6-1 score.
The final team score was 4-3, and the Cougars improved their record to 3 wins and 2 losses. This upset was a huge win for the Cougars, leaving them with hope to make the playoffs again this year. Jayla Hall reports, “I’m really proud of this team and how much we have improved just over the last few weeks.”
