As a graduation requirement, every North Providence High School senior must complete a senior project. This project could be about anything you’re passionate about. It’s to encourage seniors to explore outside their comfort zone, or want to learn more about something they’re interested in.
For her senior project, Arielle Bey fulfilled a long-time dream of hers: to compete in a pageant. Her goal is to focus on how pageantry can be a source of empowerment for women by building self-esteem and confidence. Following that, she will create a digital scrapbook that documents her journey, reflections, and key moments. Bey said, “ I want to break down the typical stereotypes around pageantry and inspire others who may be nervous to chase after their dreams, whatever it may be, to just take a leap of faith and go for it!”
Bey’s journey starts by finding a mentor (introduced by fellow teachers at NPHS) who is Krisily Fernstrom, Miss Rhode Island USA 2003. She then began researching the negative aspects of pageantry first to debunk the rumors. Bey mentioned that she is typically a more shy person, so the process was exciting but also nerve-wracking. To compete in the pageant, she had to complete an application, go through interviews, raise money for sponsorships, and prepare different outfits for each segment of the pageant. This included an interview, evening gown, and activewear segments. To practice confidently walking on stage in heels, she began wearing heels around the house while doing chores. In addition, she’s been using YouTube and TikTok to practice mastering full-glam makeup.
Next week, she will be attending a pageant orientation where she will meet some of the other contestants, begin practicing their walks, and learn more about what to expect on the day of. On behalf of North Providence High School, help me wish her luck at the Miss Teen Rhode Island USA on May 24-25!
