On November 3rd, Amazon Prime released a spin off of their popular show The Boys called Gen: V. Gen: V follows the story of the students at the fictional university of “Godolkin”, a school for the super human who wish to use their talents for the theatrics or heroism.
The show contains the gore which was often present in The Boys, but has other factors that contribute to the show’s realism. The main cast consists of complex characters who have realistic flaws that add an element of realism to the show. Even though Gen: V is based in a world where superheroes exist, Gen: V feels completely realistic and grasps some of the problems that members of our generation fail to see. For example many of the characters in the show suffer from mental disorders that have only been recognized as of late.
A character from the show, Jordan, has a severe case of gender dysphoria due to their ability to swap from man to woman. Another character, Sam, while having immense super strength, possesses schizophrenia which leads him to be incredibly violent. This show’s ability to posses fictional elements which appease to the average watcher, and the ability to shed light on genuine problems that should be acknowledged is not something that is very common in modern television. Overall, Gen: V is a show that should be praised for its visionary writing and for the realistic elements that contribute to it’s amazing story telling.
NOTE: Due to violence and sexual situations, Gen V is for mature audiences only.
