Nerd Herd Super Smash Bros. Tournament

Jacob Jorgensen, Entertainment Editor

Before Winter Break the Nerd Herd held their annual video game tournament. This year the selected game was Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U. The participation for the tournament was excellent this year with the majority of the club joining the tournament. Devin Fountaine won the tournament with Jacob Cloutier coming in second.

For those unfamiliar with the game Super Smash Bros. is a rather unique fighting game. Unlike standard fighting games character do not have a health bar and can only be killed by  launching them off a floating platform, commonly called the “stage.” Damage done to a character makes them launch farther and is displayed as a percentage. For the tournament the game mode was set to stock, which gives each character a certain number of lives that are commonly referred to as “stock.” For example, for one stock each character has one life, for two stock each one has two and so on.

Everything was well organized with competitors starting a four player free-for-all at three stock. The singular victor of each free-for-all was then set into a three-way semifinals at one stock. The winners of the semi-finals then went into the final match which was a one on one at two stock. Overall, the tournament went smoothly  with a good time enjoyed by all that were present.
