Rhode Island Law Day 2016
May 3, 2016
On April 29th, North Providence High School participated in the statewide Law Day. For two periods in the library, students from the Law and Society class as well as Criminal Justice class and Mock Trial club were able to listen to the Honorable Superior Court Judge Richard A. Licht, Attorney Robert Corrente, and SRO Officer Kevin speak about careers in law.
The speakers covered topics such as probation rates, Miranda rights, and incarceration rates. Students learned about the difference between parole and probation, why people are reminded of their Miranda rights before being arrested, and the course of action to becoming a judge. The Miranda rights are given while a person is being arrested because those are the rights that apply at the time and can be lost later on. The rest of a person’s Constitutional rights, such as the right to vote, are not reminded at the time of arrest because they do not apply to the situation.
Students were also able to ask any questions they had about the law field such as what it is like to be a public defender, and what it is like to defend someone for a heinous crime. By then end of the periods, students gained new insight on the law field and what it is like to work as a police officer, lawyer, or judge.
