It was going to end have a story book ending until it all came crashing down.
On a November 8th at Rhode Island College, everybody was in attendance to see the North Providence Lady Cougars soccer team take on the Lady Wizards of West Warwick. This was a very special game because North Providence had already captured the division title, first in many years, and wanted to finish of a near perfect season with a state title. The only blemishes on that undefeated record were the 2 draws the Lady Cougars surrendered, both 1-1 scores to none other than West Warwick. The Cougars still came into this game as the favorite, but unfortunately, the game was not in their favor.
The start of the game was a predictable one. Both teams were feeling each other out, going back and forth like 2 giants do. But that was short lived as in under the first 3 minutes of the game, Faith Couture dribbled past a poor Cougar defense, and aimed towards goal. Even though it looked like it was stopped at first, it trickled into the back of the net. And just like that, the Lady Cougars were down 1-0. THe momentum then shifted and it was all West Warwick for the rest of the game. The Wizards attacked the Cougar’s defense very well most of this game. And when the Cougars rarely did have possession, the Wizard defense would swarm to the ball. The unfortunate own goal by the Cougars in the 32nd minute of the first half did not help either. The game ended 2-0 and left the Lady Cougars in heartbreak.
Even though they did not capture the state championship, the Lady Cougars still had a superb season. They went 14-0-2, best record in North Providence history. Even though many seniors will leave the team, the Lady Cougars still have some starters returning which will make them a forced to be reckon with in the 2015 season.
