The Cougars capped off a successful spirit week with a 19-7 victory over the Tiverton
Tigers in front of their home crowd for the homecoming game. North Providence came into the
game after losing their previous two games, but were able to get back on track.
It was not an easy one for the Cougars as the Tigers came ready to play.
On the opening kickoff, the Tigers recovered a Cougar fumble which put them in excellent field position.
Tiverton made the turnover count as they ran for a touchdown on their first possession. The
Cougars answered quickly as Nathan Moreira controlled the ground game and ran into the
endzone on the following drive to tie the game at seven. The cougars were not done as Rakeem
Bontemp would run for a long touchdown to put the Cougars ahead 13-7 at the end of the first
quarter.
The second quarter was a defensive battle as neither team were able to put points on the
board. The Cougars looked like another touchdown was coming until a fumble recovered by the
Tigers at the goal line halted the drive. Defense was the key for the Cougars as Nathan Moreira
forced a fumble recovered by North Providence. The half would end with the Cougars on top 13-
7.
Tiverton came out firing after halftime, throwing the ball majority of the drive with wide
receiver Evan Nelson making an impressive one handed grab, after already catching two
previous passes. With goal to go for the Tigers, it looked like the lead would change hands in the
third. That was until Rakeem Bontemp came up with a huge one handed interception in his own
end zone. The turnover proved pivotal as the Cougars held on to a 13-7 lead at the end of the
third.
Entering the fourth with a tight game, the Tigers would not go away. Forcing another
fumble at the goal line, the Tigers were able to recover in their own end zone and looked to put
points on the board. The Cougar did not let up, as they forced a punt to take the ball away from
the Tiverton offense. Looking to seal the game, the Cougars took over and immediately ran
inside the Tiverton ten yard line. On third and goal, quarterback David Tacelli came up big,
finding senior captain Juan Rios in the end zone for a touchdown pass to secure the win for
North Providence, The Cougars would run out the clock and beat the Tiverton Tigers by a final
score of 19-7.
The Cougars improved to 4-2 in Division IV play and look to improve next Saturday as
they go on the road to face a tough Scituate team.
