Richard Reviews: The Hate U Give

The Hate U Give is a drama directed by George Tillman Jr. and stars Amandla Stenberg, Regina Hall, Russell Hornsby and Algee Smith among others.  It is rated PG-13 and is 2hr. 13min.  Starr Carter and Khalil are African American teenagers.  After witnessing the murder of Khalil by a white police officer, Starr must stand up for what’s right and deal with how the shooting effects her family and friends.  There are also protest occurring in her home town because of the shooting.  This was a very hard film to watch, but not because the film was bad.  This was a great film that is brutally realistic about its subject matter.  Racial violence and protests happen frequently in today’s society, and the film executes this greatly.  The story is extremely compelling and I was very interested in what was going on and why.  The whole cast is spectacular and I really hope that the supporting cast receives Oscar nominations.  Overall, The Hate U Give is not only a great film, but an important film that I would recommend to everyone, mainly given to the political climate of modern America. I will give this film three popcorn buckets out of five.
